Welcome to 1917 where a young woman is out in the west to gentle horses . When she rides up to a farm yard in Oregon . She is a young woman in a man's world . While the men are out fighting in the war she is out gentling horses . She has such a sweet tender way of helping the horses . There are more ways to break a horse then bucking the wild out of them . This book had me hooked from the first page . The author paints such a picture . The characters are so well written and complex . The main character Martha , I connect with her soo much . She is sweet but also strong , she really doesn't fit in anywhere. She is no nonsense and I would call her shy . She doesn't want to do the womanly stuff . She is a cowgirl and she loves horses . You really see her blossom through out this book . The familys in this book are such great characters . They all bring Martha to the realization that family is more then the people who are your parents . The Bliss's treat her like another daughter . They so sweet and kind and they grow to love Martha. Henry is such a sweet guy . He falls for Martha and slowly romances her . I loved Henry he is just so sweet and lovable . He is a no nonsense guy .

The Hearts of Horses Molly Gloss 9780618799909 Books Reviews

Martha did not believe in "breaking" horses. Instead, she learned how to tame wild horses with kindness and understanding. Leaving a home with little to know love, she headed into the wild west with the intent of creating a career for herself training horses. and sometimes their owners as well.

This is a well written and well researched fictional story of life in Oregon's cattle country in the early 1900s. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I did not want this book to end. I wanted to go on reading it every day. Instead of trying to impress the readers with flowery phrases, descriptions and big words, as so many authors do, Ms Gloss let us absorb this story in it's simplicity, boiled down to the essence of life as it really is, with both the good and the bad. She made you feel you were right there in the midst of these people's lives. I am an old woman and the author captured life as it truly used to be. I highly recommend this book.
Loved this book. I learned about historical Oregon and met several horses and fascinating characters. The main character was wonderfully awkward yet strong and hopeful. She knew her weaknesses and accepted herself as she was. She has zero pretenses and was very likable. Her distance for cruel people was quietly evident. Life back then was difficult for anyone trying to make a life off land or animals. The last chapter made the book IMO. No cheating and reading the last chapter first! It's too fun to follow her in her journey.
I loved every word of this beautifully written story. Molly Gloss has way of painting word pictures that is tender, powerful and very moving. She is obviously well acquainted with horses and the way they were treated at the turn of the last century so her heroine's 'modern' ideas about breaking a horse gently come as a bit of a shock to the hardened old cowboys and ranchers. I was easily drawn into those hard scrabble lives and the writing is so wonderfully evocative that I could see the scenery in my mind and picture every single character in the book from horses to people. I was sad when the story ended and look forward to enjoying more books by this author!
19 year-old Martha Lessen comes to Elwha County, Oregon in the early winter of 1917. She has a string of three of her own horses with her, including Dolly, a mare that had survived a terrible fire and was scarred and disfigured.

Most of the young men - ranch and farm hands - are off fighting in World War I and Martha is able to realize her dream of gentling horses in this area of the Little Bird Woman River.

Independent and brusk in her men's clothing, Martha finds a group of horses to gentle in the area she's staying in and she starts a circuit riding approach to riding all the horses regularly.

I read this book when it first came out a few years ago and loved it. I decided to re-read it after just finishing Falling from Horses, the story of Martha's son in 1938. It really doesn't matter in which order you read these two books - just be sure to do it.

Lyrical prose, larger-than-life characters who you want to get to know, period pieces that bring the details of these bygone eras into the forefront and bring the history alive - author Gloss brings all these things in both of these books.

I highly recommend both books to history buffs, readers who like strong female protagonists and anyone that loves darn good writing.
As you read this story, centered around a young woman bronc buster, with a remarkable way to train horses, you will lose your heart to her, and most of the others who make up the West in the early days of World War 1. A book like this, so simply told, so easy to read, a quietly told story, but a heart grabber non the less, will entertain you, teach you history of our earlier times, of how wonderful most people of those days could be. It reads quickly and easily, a gem of a story, the kind that may make us better people also. find it, and buy it, and share it with the young in your family, all the way to the oldest.
