Always a Witch Carolyn MacCullough Books

I LOVED these books! I read this duology over the weekend last week and I could not put it down. Even before I finished the first book I was already reaching for the second. Which is why I chose to do a single book review even though they are separate novels. I was pulled into the story from page one of Once A Witch. Book one starts out as an explanation of mistaken potential. The prophecy Tamsin receives at birth never comes to pass. She views herself as the normal one in a family of witches. But these aren't your everyday potion witches- these witches have Talents. Talents like time travel, controlling the weather, controlling the mind, telling the future, and freezing people. We follow Tamsin as she struggles to find herself and where she belongs. I just about loved every thing about Tamsin. The conversations she would have with her best friend Agatha and her "friend" Gabriel where freaking hilarious. It seemed her and Gabriel have some dirty minds though because a lot of their jokes between each other where a bit sexual. I really enjoyed watching her grow. The final ending in book two brought tears to my eyes. I felt like I was there through the whole journey with her. It might be kind of lame of me to say this but I was proud of her.

My second favorite character has to be the Grandmother. She is a wise old woman who seemed to always have the answers even if she doesn't always give them. In book one, I wont lie, I didn't like her that much- toward the end especially. She did some thing to Tamsin that just seemed cruel at the time. Once I finished book two however, I couldn't believe I ever hated her. I wanted her as my grandmother.

If I had to chose between both books I would have to chose the second one. Which says a lot about a author who can make the next installment even more riveting then the first. I am so glad I bought these books. They hold everything a reader could possibly want. Action, Love, Magic. I guarantee if you read these books you will love them as much as I do.

Always a Witch Carolyn MacCullough Books Reviews

This story jumps around a bit before it finds its rhythm. Once it does, all the actions of the characters makes do much mote sense. Random rather than being the weakest turns out to have a spine of steel. You will regret and rejoice with her at the end.
I read Once a Witch about six months ago and had practically been salivating and counting down the seconds for the sequel, Always a Witch to become available.

I particularly loved Tamsin and Gabriel (the giddy school girl in me knows that Gabriel Snowe is exactly what I look for in a man - protective, caring and somehow entirely tuned in to the fact that his girlfriend comes loaded down with more baggage than a ordinary, or not so ordinary, teenage girl should have). The idea of Traveling through time and developing Talents was a unique take on witchcraft that was able to capture my imagination, but, this sequel did not live up to my hopes.

After making my way through the book, the climax comes out of nowhere and the ending smacks straight into it, not giving the reader any time to process. It feels uncomfortable and rushed and doesn't do the characters or the story justice. The fact that there is an "Epilogue" to finish it off is absolutely ludicrous. Epilogues shouldn't take place two minutes after the story has "ended," it would have made far more sense to just have another Chapter, because that one strange thing was just another clue as to the fact that the end was unsettling and unpleasant. Essentially, in the final moments, the vivid, brilliant, thrilling and racing story of the two books combined warped into a dull, drab marathon where the contestants have chosen to limp the last few feet over the finish line.

So, despite my high hopes, I ended up with a sour taste in my mouth and am now left to flip back to Once a Witch so that I can relive the glory days of when this series had potential.
But this one doesn't. The sequel fulfilled my high expectations created by the first book,Once a Witch, and I thoroghly enjoyed it! I didn't remember all that had happened in the first one since it had been a while since I read it, but I remembered as I read along. That's always nice when you don't feel totally lost the whole book through. I would recommend, if you can, reading them together though. The ending did a good job wrapping up the story, but it was also kind of sad. I would say... bitter-sweet.
I loved this book and going through the time travel elements, the insight into some new Talents, characters, and world building. I have to admit, the ending really sold this book for me! A lot of times, a two-book series doesn't end well, and many books just suck at endings anyway. Not so with this book! The way that Tamsin understands her grandmothers words really was a twist for me and I wasn't expecting it. I loved being caught off guard like that, and have it turn out in a way that felt very satisfying to me.
Tamsin has been haunted by her grandmother’s prophecy that she will soon be forced to make a crucial decision—one so terrible that it could harm her family forever. She decides that she must go back in time to follow her family's enemy to change what happened then and effect the present day. If she fails, it can mean her family in the present will not exist. As time runs out, both families square off in a thrilling display of magic. And to her horror, Tamsin finally understands the nature of her fateful choice.
A serious improvement compared to the first! All my pet peeves from the first book were pretty much eliminated from the second book. For starters it felt way more action packed than the first. We pick up where we left off with Tamsin and family deciding how they plan to face off with the future troubles ahead. It was way more action packed because Tamsin disguises herself as a lady's maid in the enemy's home where there is a whirlwind of trouble brewing. If there isn't the domineering La Spider there is the deceptive and experimental son Liam. Jessica is the only normal one. The action gets intense so it's definitely a great read.
