I really didn't want to read this book. Who needs to read about sadness and despair, inhumanity? Well I did read it and found it utterly absorbing. There were many harsh moments in Ken's life, much that could only be explained as depravity , meanes, the rot that conquerors sink into. But kien and his family did survive. The writing was clear, straightforward and, at time, beautiful despite the journey.

The Unwanted A Memoir of Childhood Kien Nguyen 9780316284615 Books Reviews

This is one of the best written books I have read lately. The story is so sad but, I couldn't put it down and spent a whole box of tissues while reading it.
I didn't have idea of what happened in Vietnam once the Americans left. This book tells the missing half of that tragic war.
I'm glad I read it! I now see the American-Vietnamese with more admiration and understand where they're coming from. I'm also glad that Kien Nguyen made it to USA and has had a successful life. I hope he keeps on writing; I love the way he expresses himself in English. I'm now one of his fans... way to go Kien!!!
What a great biography!! This book definitely made me cry a couple times. I couldn't put it down. I literally finished this in 3 days. I am such a fan and I have been recommending this to my friends and family.
I've been studying Asian non-fiction for years. Here you have a young boy, who must become the man of the family a a young child. Being Asian, and a mixed race is taboo in some cultures, as mentioned here several times thoughout this book. The amount of abuse this child suffered in his lifetime is enough to make anyone cry , and feel empathy. Often I questioned the mothers love for her mixed race children , only to discover that while cruel, and abusive at times to her children she wanted them to be strong and survive.
This is an absolutely riveting book, but just a word of caution This is not one of those feel-good, happy books. It is a painful read and you will be disgusted with humanity and all its cruelty when you are finished reading it. If you're a sensitive person like I am, be prepared to be emotionally exhausted from reading Kien's story. My eyes were swollen from crying. Sure, you will be relieved at the end of the book when you know that Kien and his family made it out of Vietnam, but all the pages leading up to that will tear at your soul. The Unwanted is beatifully written, and impossible to put down, but this book will haunt me for the rest of my life. NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!
My apologies - I didn't rate the book or the seller properly the first time (all due to operator error by clicking the first star instead of the last). The book arrived on time and I feel in better condition that they reported. I was intrigued by this book as I work in the dental equipment field and spoke with Dr. Nguyen personally. As I do with all of my customers, I look up their office website and read the information about the dentist. His bio intrigued me because I too am a Vietnam era child and unfortunately the history taught in schools barely touches the Vietnam war. Well written book that grabs you from the first pages.
I have this three stars because it was so detailed it was almost unbearable. The story is interesting and the Amerasian children born during the Vietnam War is an interesting topic. Also acknowledge the author wrote this as therapy for himself. The great ending is the escaping Vietnam but I had so many questions at the end!
Stark, brutal, bleak, hopelessness. These are all adjectives I would use to describe Kien Nguyen's life nearly from inception. I had a difficult time with the theme of man's inhumanity to others. Then again, it has been that way since Cain killed Abel. We always feel that it can never happen again since we have become so civilized. Then we read a book like this or a daily newspaper, and realize that nothing seems to have changed in the past 6000 years. We have much for which we must answer.
