Tangle of Need Psy/Changeling Nalini Singh Books

This is probably closer to a 2.5 but I did enjoy the other characters enough to go with the 3 instead of a 2.

So, this book is what happens when an author decides that rather than doing two slightly longer novellas, we're going to smash them together to try and make 1 book. And.....yeah, there are problems.

Like many other reviewers, the main romance did nothing for me. Even in an attempt at a second read I tended to skip or skim their stuff. Part of the problem was the lack of....chemistry, part was just the general dis-interest of the characters and their story. The setting around their story was more interesting to me so having to stop to read their parts was frustrating. The fact that they become connected but don't actually fully connect as other couples have also leaves it less then desired.

The stuff with Hawke and Sienna along with other characters was more fun and involving. The only complaint with their half of the book was the extremely anti-climactic threat to Sienna. That was a waste of epic proportions to me. I believe, had she done to separate novellas, both stories would have been fleshed out more and been more involved and generally better quality. Price wise I do not think it's worth the standard 7.99 this author uses. However, if you enjoy Hawke/Sienna, I would say to go ahead an buy it. Their scenes, along with the other characters that come up, are worth it.

Tangle of Need Psy/Changeling Nalini Singh Books Reviews

Up until this very book, I've given all of the PsyChangeling books 5 stars. Of course I have ones Ive liked more than others, but no couples I downright disliked.

Enter Ruiz and Adria.

For me it was so bad that 45% in (in kindle terms), I stopped and reread *the entire series* to remember 'the good times'. (No, Im serious. I was that bored with those two - although, at 56%, things did get better...... probably cuz that's when it stopped being almost exclusively their screwed up "relationship" and they got involved deeper in the metaplot)

I actually near-hated them up to 30% of the book. 30-50%, I only generally disliked them. 50%+, their scenes were usually something that I skipped if possible, or endured when necessary for the metaplot. I could have tolerated them being a side romance, like Ward and Lara, but honestly... in all of the characters in this world, these were the two you gave us? I think I could have dealt with Ruiz (the concept of meeting your mate too late was an interesting one) if he'd had a woman more like Brenna or Sienna - ie, out to kick ass and take names. Er, his heart. One person struggling with how things _are_ versus how you've always expected they would be is good. Both parties starting off intensely disliking each other, then "upgrading" to friends-with-benefits does not a romance make (imho). Although I must give Ms. Singh credit for the eventual outcome of that romance. I was expecting a cliche "poof, oops, mistake, now it's all perfect like you originally expected!" and got something .... different. Unexpectedly pleasant. I dont want to give any solid spoilers, since this was the small bit of light in their story, for me.

NOW THE GOOD PART! ) I wouldn't give it 4 stars based on the above...

Im not sure if she did it intentionally because she knew how weak the "main" story was, but you get almost as much Hawke and Sienna as Ruiz and Adria, and it's good, interesting stuff about how they're progressing. Also, the leaps in the metaplot are huge - as it should be, considering the world changing events of the previous book. The critical updates as well as the added Hawke and Sienna are why Im giving it 4 stars. Judged solely on Adria and Ruiz, Id consider myself generous giving it 2 stars.

Sidenote I hate hate hate hate cliffhangers, because I loathe waiting to find out what happens (I often wont want TV shows until the entire season is out, Im terrible )) and Ms Singh leaves a doozy at the end of this one. If I would have known how insane it would leave me (in a good way, lol, if you have to have a cliffhanger, go huge or go home) I probably would have refused to buy this book until the next one came out, so I could immediately start with the new one. Consider yourself warned!
Series Psy-Changeling #11

--One Sentence Summary--
SnowDancer Lieutenant, Riaz, has returned to the den damaged and heartbroken and the last thing he needs is a crazy attraction to SnowDancer soldier, Adria.

--What are the Issues--
Riaz is a lone wolf and while in Rome he finds his mate, the only problem is that the human woman is already married and deeply in love with her husband. Wounded and heartbroken, Riaz returns to the den to heal. Adria has finally ended things with her ex-boyfriend Martin who couldn't handle that Adria's dominance was greater than his. A once loving relationship turned toxic and Adria isn't ready to start something that could end the same way.

--What I Liked and Didn’t Liked--
Dual identities -- Nalini Singh does an amazing job in this series of showing the duality of the changelings identities. They are not human and they are not animal, they're both. I've read a ton of paranormal romance with shapeshifters and Singh's portrayal of them is probably my favorite. She perfectly blends the more primal animal side that is driven by dominance and submission levels and the urge to find and be with your mate alongside the more rational human side that sees all the shades of gray in a situation. This book with Riaz's taken mate is a perfect example of how well Singh weaves animal and human to make an interesting character. Riaz knows he can't have the woman who is his mate but he also understands that it would be unhealthy to completing isolate himself from an intimate relationship and he can't deny that he's attracted to Adria. The struggle between both his sides is very poignant in this book.

The Romance -- Adria and Riaz are probably my least favorite couple in the series, which means that I still liked them but their love story was hard to read sometimes. Things start out so rocky between them because Riaz is hurting over his mate and Adria is extremely prickly toward Riaz because she doesn't want to be attracted to him. They work things out and decide to give each other a shot but there's still an undertone of pain in their relationship that lasts almost until the very end.

Human Alliance -- Most of this series has been focused on the Changelings and Psy with human characters interspersed throughout. When Singh added the Human Alliance I was happy to see a strong representation for this group. They still haven't played as big of a role as the other groups but I'm glad that the Alliance made an appearance in this one. I love Bowen's character and I hope we get his story sometime especially now that they Alliance has the implants.

--Final Thoughts--
I loved the continued world building and story arc but the romance between Adria and Riaz was not one of my favorites.
This is probably closer to a 2.5 but I did enjoy the other characters enough to go with the 3 instead of a 2.
